I spent the first day of 2019 with Kathy Esch. Wait until you hear what we've been up to!
Long Time Fan, Big Time Dream
After studying medicinal herbs, natural health and midwifery since 1993, I have opened my herbal apothecary and natural health clinic in New Richmond, Wisconsin. Happily, Hasewinkle Natural Health is becoming one of those places that you step into and think to yourself, "Wow! I wish I could LIVE here!" And that's the DREAM, a community resource that makes people feel better.
People want to bring a piece of that peace home, and have been asking me to formulate home and skin care products, which up until now haven't been my focus.
I decided to contact Shepherd's Choice, a vendor that I met at least 10, if not 15 years ago at the MN State Fair. I met Kathy and bought her Laundry Spot Bar and Shepherdess Handcream, and was hooked! I sent an email through her website asking if I could sell her products at my new place.
She said no.
Because she wants to retire, and ideally, she wanted to teach her formulas to someone to take over and carry on. I told her flat out, "I'm your woman!"
As it happens, I was going to be in the area the following weekend, so we arranged to meet. Kathy is perfectly lovely and her workshop is about as picturesque as you can image any dedicated traditional soapmaker's to be. We discovered that we have so very much in common, from our homes to our hobbies, we are cut from the same cloth. She gave me a tour, a brief inventory and a price. I could hardly hold still I was so excited.
On the long drive back to Wisconsin, the doubt set it. "What was I doing? How could I even consider doing this, when I just left my job of 9 years? Did I forget that no more paychecks would be coming? And who 'buys' companies anyway?...No one I have every been close to." And so on...
But I promised myself that I would really look at the possibilities. Money was tight, but I knew it was a fair and honest deal, and I really knew that I would be heartbroken if someone else got this opportunity. As it turns out an unexpected windfall came just in time, in the amount of the agreed upon price plus a tank of gas to get over there and seal the deal. True story.
So on January first, I was back at Kathy's moving Shepherd's Choice out of her place and into mine. She also arranged a play date and made lunch for my son. Kathy is good people.
I Promise to Do My Best
I am new to owning a store, being a single mom, and managing clients all at the same time. But I make you this promise: I will do my absolute best for you. I will formulate, test, and sell only the best products that I can make. When you consult with me, I will be fully present with you. I will listen and care deeply about you. When you ask for information, I will provide the best resources and references that I can find.
I will be honest about what I am capable and incapable of providing. If I ever disappoint you, I want to know about it and I want to make it right. I am building this practice because I want you to feel better, and I want to build a community with you.
